Meet Madame Harriet Ploeger, Founder & CEO of Melumé Skinscience

Harriet Ploeger, Founder & CEO of Melumé Skinscience on Redefining Skincare through Science.

After more than 40 years in the skincare industry, Harriet Ploeger has launched what she describes as the culmination of everything she has learned throughout her career. Melumé Skinscience was created with one clear purpose: to develop products that deliver real results through science, transparency, and clinically researched ingredients.

"The skincare of the future starts with truth, transparency, and education," says Ploeger. "I became frustrated by these misleading claims and brands built on marketing, celebrities, and hype rather than merit."

That philosophy is particularly relevant for the GCC, where consumers have become increasingly knowledgeable about ingredients and expect products to perform in one of the world's most challenging climates. Rather than selecting ingredients because they are trending, Ploeger says every Melumé formula is built around scientific evidence.

"For us, science-backed skincare means that we do not select ingredients because they are fashionable or trending, we choose them because there is strong scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness." Developed and manufactured in Germany, each formula is evaluated not only for its active ingredients, but also for their concentration, stability, compatibility and delivery into the skin, ensuring both efficacy and skin tolerance.

Central to every Melumé product is the exclusive GMOD™ Complex, developed around what Ploeger considers the three pillars of healthy, youthful-looking skin: cellular regeneration, protection against photoaging and optimal hydration. Combining patented peptide technology, plant-cell actives and biomimetic ingredients, the complex forms the foundation of every formula before being paired with targeted actives for individual skin concerns.

For consumers living in the Gulf, where constant sun exposure, high temperatures and air conditioning place continuous stress on the skin barrier, Ploeger believes skincare needs to go beyond surface hydration.

"At Melumé Skinscience, many of our formulations were specifically developed to help strengthen the skin's natural resilience under these conditions." She explains that by combining eight molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, biomimetic technologies and multilamellar ceramides, the brand focuses on reinforcing the skin barrier while maintaining hydration at multiple levels.

"Ultimately, our goal is not simply to hydrate the skin temporarily, but to help it function optimally, remain resilient, and maintain a healthy, radiant appearance even in demanding climates such as the Gulf region."

Ploeger is equally passionate about prevention, describing daily sun protection as one of the most important skincare investments anyone can make. She encourages protection not only against UVA and UVB rays but also against blue and visible light, stressing that sunscreen should always be the final step of a morning routine and reapplied throughout the day.

When asked which products best represent Melumé's philosophy, Ploeger finds it impossible to choose just one. Instead, she highlights the Super C-Shot 25%, a water-free vitamin C treatment, alongside the Micro Peel, which renews and refines the skin after a single treatment, and the Wonder Eye Cream, a product many of the brand's customers consider indispensable.

Although skincare is often marketed differently to men and women, Ploeger's philosophy remains refreshingly straightforward. "I have never believed in skincare for men or skincare for women, I believe in treating skin concerns." Her formulations are designed to address the needs of the skin itself, making them suitable across genders, ages and life stages.

Looking ahead, Ploeger sees enormous potential for Melumé across the Middle East. She believes the region's increasingly educated consumers appreciate transparency, clinically proven ingredients and genuine performance over celebrity endorsements or fleeting beauty trends.

"The GCC is an especially exciting region for us because consumers are highly educated, ingredient-conscious, and truly appreciate performance."

And for Ploeger, success ultimately comes down to one thing: "If, in five years' time, people think of Melumé Skinscience as a brand that changed their expectations of what skincare can achieve, then I would consider that our greatest success."
