Theresa Fonseca Looks to the Givenchy Archives for Her Wedding Dress

For her wedding to filmmaker Gustav von Fürstenberg, Brazilian actress Theresa Fonseca turned to Givenchy to create a bridal look rooted in the House’s rich fashion history.

Styled by Pedro Sales, Fonseca chose a custom interpretation of Look 21 from Alexander McQueen’s Fall 1997 Haute Couture collection for Givenchy, revisiting one of the designer’s most memorable creations from his time at the French Maison.

The original look drew inspiration from Audrey Hepburn’s iconic appearance in the 1964 film My Fair Lady, bringing a sense of old-Hollywood romance and theatricality to McQueen’s couture vision. Nearly three decades later, Givenchy reimagined the silhouette once again, this time transforming it into a wedding gown created especially for Fonseca.

The result was a striking blend of archival reference and contemporary bridal design. Sculptural yet romantic, the gown reflected the drama associated with McQueen’s work while retaining the elegance and refinement long connected to the Givenchy name.

Creating the bespoke dress required more than 1,400 hours of work, highlighting the extraordinary level of craftsmanship behind the piece. Every element was developed specifically for Fonseca, turning an archival couture reference into something deeply personal for her wedding day.

She completed the look with a delicate veil and long gloves, allowing the gown’s dramatic silhouette to remain the focal point. The pared-back styling gave the historic reference room to speak for itself, while still feeling distinctly modern.

The dress also continued a long relationship between Givenchy and cinematic style. Audrey Hepburn became one of the House’s most enduring muses through her close friendship and creative partnership with founder Hubert de Givenchy, with the actress helping to define an image of understated elegance that remains closely associated with the Maison today.

Fonseca’s wedding look therefore became more than simply a custom bridal gown. By looking back to McQueen’s 1997 couture collection — itself inspired by one of cinema’s most recognisable fashion moments — Givenchy connected several generations of design within a single dress.

For a bride searching for something both timeless and unexpected, the archives proved the perfect place to begin.
