Dolly Parton’s Most Iconic Fashion Moments

From rhinestone-covered gowns and dramatic fringe to the Bob Mackie butterfly dress, Dolly Parton never believed in doing things by halves.

Following Dolly Parton’s death at the age of 80, the world is remembering not only one of country music’s most recognisable voices, but a woman who created an image entirely her own.

Big blonde hair, rhinestones, fringe, figure-hugging silhouettes and plenty of sparkle became signatures she returned to throughout her career. But what made Parton’s style memorable was not simply how much she wore. It was the confidence with which she wore it.

Long before rhinestones became inseparable from the Dolly Parton image, many of the signatures were already there.

For her British debut at the International Festival of Country Music at London’s Empire Pool in 1976, Parton performed in a fitted pale pink trouser suit scattered with sparkle, paired with oversized hoop earrings and her already towering blonde hair.

The silhouette feels distinctly ’70s, but the formula is very Dolly: fitted, feminine, glamorous and designed to be seen from the back of the room.

Few looks capture Parton’s theatrical approach to fashion quite like Bob Mackie’s butterfly dress

Created for the 1979 television special Dolly & Carol in Nashville, the black gown transformed when Parton lifted her arms, with enormous wing-like sleeves covered in shimmering butterfly markings.

It was dramatic even by Parton’s standards, but that was precisely the point. Rather than allowing a costume to overpower her, she always seemed completely at home inside the spectacle.

    The 1988 People's Choice Awards

If 1980 had a dress code, Dolly Parton understood it perfectly.

At the 14th People’s Choice Awards in 1988, she arrived in an all-white gown covered with pearls, crystals and cascading beaded fringe. A sheer panel framed the high neckline, while a white fur wrap, embellished clutch and pearl earrings completed the look.

At the New York premiere, Parton arrived in an off-the-shoulder, diamond-encrusted gown covered in pearl and Art Deco detailing, paired with a matching cropped jacket and dramatic ringlets. Even surrounded by co-stars Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, and Daryl Hannah, it was Parton who stole the show.

For her appearance on The Tonight Show, Parton kept the glamour but pared back the scale, a white fringe jacket, hoop earrings, and loose curls. It was a rare moment of restraint, though "restraint," for Parton, still meant fringe catching the studio lights with every gesture.

Three decades on, Parton returned to the awards stage as a guest host for a special CMA broadcast celebrating legendary women in country music. She marked the occasion in a striped dress, a quieter choice by her standards, but no less deliberate. Even stripped of rhinestones, the presence was unmistakably hers.

    A Legacy Written in Sequins

Across five decades, the throughline was never really the fringe, the crystals, or the impossibly big hair. It was the fact that Dolly Parton treated her image as a creative choice, not an accident, one she controlled completely, on her own terms, look after look. As she once put it herself, she knew exactly what she was doing: dressing like a woman who had already decided who she wanted to be, long before anyone else got a vote.
