Queen Rania has long been known for her elegant style, but for her 56th birthday she swapped formal dressing for a relaxed yet refined denim look.

To mark the occasion on 31 August, a new portrait of the Queen was released, showing her sitting in a garden wearing a white cotton T-shirt from Massimo Dutti tucked into classic blue denim.

Rather than the gowns or polished tailoring we often see her in, the relaxed look felt effortless and surprisingly ’90s. It is a combination that has never really gone out of style. A simple white T-shirt and well-fitting jeans need very little else, and on Queen Rania the look is a reminder that some of the best outfits are often the simplest.

She finished the outfit with her signature Apple Watch and a pair of custom-made diamond earrings in the shape of seven-pointed stars. The symbol appears on the Jordanian flag and is associated with the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the opening surah of the Quran, bringing a subtle and meaningful reference to Jordan into the look.

Style with meaning 

Queen Rania has often used fashion as a way to celebrate Jordanian design and craftsmanship, wearing pieces by local designers alongside international fashion houses and incorporating references to the country’s culture and heritage into her wardrobe.

Her latest portrait takes a much quieter approach, but still feels completely true to her style. Rather than relying on a statement dress or elaborate jewellery, the details are what make the outfit feel considered.

The birthday comes during a particularly happy period for Queen Rania and her family. Earlier this month, Princess Iman celebrated her second birthday, while Queen Rania's daughter, Princess Iman bint Abdullah II, recently welcomed twin daughters, Talia and Rania.

Away from fashion, Queen Rania has spent more than two decades supporting projects focused on education, children, families and young people in Jordan. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of both the Al Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans and the Royal Health Awareness Society.
