    The dazzling craft of gem-setting

Vacheron Constantin’s pursuit of excellence in gem-setting dates back to the 19th century, when the Maison incorporated this art into its repertoire of métiers d’art. At the time, timepieces extended beyond functionality, serving as jewellery and fashion statements, richly adorned with precious stones and intricate decorative techniques.

The Overseas Self-Winding 35 mm High Jewellery watch exemplifies this heritage, featuring a total of 1,430 diamonds (~12.58 carats) and combining both brilliant and baguette cuts in a sophisticated composition. The result is a seamless interplay of light, texture, and form that elevates the watch to the realm of High Jewellery.

A signature element of the Overseas collection, the Maltese cross motif inspired by Vacheron Constantin’s emblem, is brought to life through the brilliance of 60 invisibly set baguette-cut diamonds on the bezel. Invisible setting is among the most demanding techniques in haute joaillerie, requiring the creation of an intricate gold framework composed of ultra-thin rails measuring just 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. Once concealed beneath the gemstones, this structure allows the diamonds to appear as though they are floating effortlessly across the surface.

Each stone must then be meticulously prepared, with a V-shaped groove cut along its underside to align perfectly with the gold framework. The precision required is extraordinary, with tolerances of only 0.02 millimetres, ensuring that each diamond sits perfectly flush without gaps or visible metal. This level of craftsmanship is so exacting that setting a single stone can take several hours, underscoring the exceptional dedication behind every detail.

A canvas of light: snow setting and diamond artistry

The refined beauty of the invisibly set baguette diamonds contrasts elegantly with the multifaceted brilliance of the brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the dial and bracelet. The dial itself is designed with restraint and purpose, displaying only the essential indications of time and date to maximise the visual impact of its diamond surface.

At the heart of the dial lies a snow-set composition of 314 brilliant-cut diamonds (~1.65 carats). Snow setting is a highly complex technique in which diamonds of varying sizes are meticulously arranged across the entire gold surface. Though the placement appears random, each stone is precisely selected and positioned to minimise visible metal and optimise the play of light.

The effect is reminiscent of sunlight shimmering across a field of snowflakes, with every facet capturing and reflecting light in a dynamic, ever-changing display. Against this radiant backdrop, 12 baguette-cut diamonds serve as hour markers, providing subtle structure and contrast within the shimmering expanse.

This meticulous artistry extends to the lugs and 18K gold bracelet, which are also snow-set with a total of 884 brilliant-cut diamonds (~6.95 carats). Each link of the bracelet is individually set before being carefully assembled, demonstrating the extraordinary level of precision and craftsmanship required at every stage of creation.

One watch, three styles: versatility redefine

The Overseas Self-Winding 35 mm High Jewellery watch embodies versatility through its innovative system of interchangeable components. Designed with adaptability in mind, the timepiece can be transformed effortlessly to suit different styles and occasions.

Each watch is delivered with a diamond-set gold bracelet as well as two additional straps, one in white rubber and one in shiny alligator leather. The model is further complemented by an interchangeable pin buckle crafted in 18K white gold or 18K 5N pink gold, set with 62 brilliant-cut diamonds (~0.33 carats). This flexibility allows the wearer to personalise the watch according to their preferences, without the need for any tools.

Adding a refined touch of colour, the white gold version is paired with a brilliant blue alligator strap, while the pink gold model is accompanied by a fuchsia alligator strap. These vivid accents contrast elegantly with the monochrome brilliance of the diamond-set case, offering a contemporary expression of style.

The interchangeability of the bracelet, straps, and buckle ensures that the watch can transition seamlessly between different looks, from a fully gem-set High Jewellery statement to a more understated yet equally refined everyday companion. Reinforcing this adaptability, the bracelet is equipped with the easy-fit system, introduced to the Overseas collection in 2016. This discreet micro-adjustment mechanism allows the wearer to fine-tune the fit, ensuring optimal comfort at all times.
