Beyond The Runway : Why the Most Beautiful Fashion Shows Are No Longer About The Catwalk
Sayhrah Noor Asif-Ali
Fashion shows were once defined by the runway itself. Today, the world's leading luxury houses are increasingly choosing extraordinary destinations where architecture, history and nature become as much a part of the collection as the garments. The modern runway has evolved into an immersive experience, transporting guests into the world behind the clothes rather than simply asking them to watch — no longer just where a collection is presented, but part of the collection itself.
In recent years, luxury houses have increasingly looked beyond the traditional runway, selecting destinations that become an integral part of the collection's narrative. Rather than serving as a beautiful backdrop, these locations help shape the story designers wish to tell, allowing guests to experience the inspiration behind the collection in a more immersive way. The runway becomes more than a place to present clothing; it transforms into a blend of storytelling, travel, theatre and exhibition, where the setting is as carefully considered as the garments themselves.

Luxury houses each use location in different ways, but all with the same goal of creating a deeper connection between the collection and its audience. Jacquemus embraced the lavender fields of Provence for its Spring/Summer 2020 show, allowing the surrounding landscape to become a natural extension of the brand's romantic Southern France identity.

Dior, meanwhile, turned to culture and craftsmanship by presenting its Fall 2025 collection in Kyoto, creating a dialogue between French couture and Japanese tradition. Chanel has long demonstrated the transformative power of setting, repeatedly reimagining the Grand Palais into immersive worlds ranging from a beach and a forest to a library and even a space station.

Most recently, Dolce & Gabbana's Alta Moda show brought guests to Sicily's Radicepura Horticultural Park, where the island's botanical beauty became inseparable from the collection itself.
Ultimately, these destination shows are about creating emotion. Few guests leave a fashion show remembering the exact dimensions of the runway, but they remember how it felt to sit among lavender fields in Provence, beneath the trees of a botanical garden in Sicily or inside a transformed Grand Palais. The setting becomes part of the memory, allowing the collection to linger long after the final look has disappeared backstage. In today's luxury landscape, fashion is no longer simply about presenting beautiful clothes; it is about creating unforgettable experiences — proof that the destination has become just as powerful as the collection itself.
