Footwear inspiration with Birkenstock: Make it Californian and comfortable

Sponsored: Exploring the Eternal Sunshine, Birkenstock 1774 collection
If there’s one trend on the runway we’ve been loving, it’s the return of flats. Perhaps it’s the past and present contributing to the resurgence of this trend — ‘90s fashion is back and in 2024 we are increasingly moving towards comfort and mindfulness.

Enter Birkenstock, a brand that’s mastered this delicate balance. With its latest edit, aptly named Eternal Sunshine, Birkenstock 1774 has once again proven that timelessness is its strong suit. While the collection channels a laid-back summer vibe, the styles are truly trans-seasonal, carrying effortlessly into autumn and winter wardrobes. The real allure here lies in the versatility.
The June Edit

In its June edit, Birkenstock draws inspiration from Southern California's iconic late-20th-century aesthetic, offering footwear that captures the era’s free-spirited essence. The Arizona and Milano, spray-painted in raffia, pay homage to the surf culture's Golden Age of the 1960s — a time when sun-bleached hair, tanned skin, and endless waves defined the lifestyle, as immortalised by rock band, The Beach Boys.
Meanwhile, the Arizona and Florida, crafted in milky PVC, serve as a nod to the plexiglass design trends of the 1970s. Like the region's rebellious streak seen in skateboarding and punk culture, these pieces play with form and function, melding with the wearer’s skin tone for a fluid, effortless look. Just as Southern California's car-centric culture symbolised freedom, these silhouettes celebrate mobility and independence, offering a modern take on the relaxed vibrancy of the era — where surf, skate, and a touch of Hollywood glamour intertwined under the sun.
The August Edit

The '80s come out on the Madrid and Milan in glazed leather with a luxurious and slick hand that recalls
sweaty summer nights. Stone-washed denim which is made to age and soften over time wraps the Arizona and Milano silhouettes. This edit features the new Eliscu which transforms a clog silhouette into the ideal home shoe well-adapted to be worn outdoors and the Sylt slide sandal, both quilted with contrast stitching classic denim workwear. Made in light and dark-washed denim with leather-covered footbeds, this style is an ode to L.A.’s laid-back nature and the lived-in comfort of the '90s.
Dress it up or dress it down; Birkenstocks have garnered their position in several closets as the comfortable shoe that can look good on biker shorts, denims, as well as formal dresses for a night out.
