Five Simple Ways to Calm a Racing Mind
Junaynah El Guthmy
Some days, your thoughts feel louder than usual. When your mind won’t slow down, it’s easy to get caught in a loop of overthinking. The good news is that small, simple actions can help bring your body and mind back to a calmer state.
One of the easiest places to start is by writing everything down. When thoughts stay in your head, they tend to circle endlessly. Putting them onto paper helps create distance and gives your mind permission to let go.

Changing your environment can also make a surprising difference. Even stepping outside for a minute, opening a window, or walking into another room can interrupt the cycle and help your brain reset.

Another gentle way to slow things down is through warmth. A cup of tea, coffee, or any warm drink encourages you to pause and gives your body a moment of comfort and grounding.

Breathing techniques are another powerful tool. Taking five slow breaths with long, extended exhales signals to your nervous system that it’s safe to relax. Often, the body needs to calm down before the mind can follow.

Finally, consider putting your phone away for ten minutes. Constant notifications and scrolling can overstimulate the brain, making it harder to settle your thoughts. A short break from screens can create the quiet your mind needs to reset.
When your thoughts feel overwhelming, returning to these small rituals can help restore a sense of balance and calm.
