In Conversation with Bahareh Ardakani Founder of ArdAzAei
Bahareh Ardakani, Founder & Creative Director of ArdAzAei about imagination, and philosophy behind her Paris-based Maison
From the origins of ArdAzAei to her relationship with science, craftsmanship, light, and modern luxury, the conversation revealed a designer whose work is shaped as much by emotion and memory as it is by structure and precision.
For Bahareh Ardakani, “ArdAzAei” was born from “a desire to create beauty beyond seasons—a continuous dialogue with nature and care.” Rather than creating fashion as a response to time, she sees design as a way of engaging with it, connecting it to mathematics, physics, architecture, and the arts. Deeply personal from the beginning, the maison’s name is a portmanteau of her parents’ surnames, while its visual language reflects both her Persian roots and Scandinavian upbringing. “My mantra has always been inner architecture creates outer radiance.” Founded in Paris, ArdAzAei became the space where engineered beauty and exceptional craftsmanship could fully converge.

Her background in engineering and gemmology became the foundation of her creative philosophy. Engineering taught her structure, precision, and what she describes as “the logic of invisible systems,” while gemmology revealed “the poetry within matter.” During her studies in Antwerp, a fascination with lapis lazuli led her to create her own multidimensional gemstone cut, an exploration that would later evolve into the ArdAzAei emblem. For Ardakani, beauty exists in duality. “Strength and delicacy, opacity and transparency, logic and emotion coexist within the same object.” Today, that architectural balance continues to guide every piece she creates.
This fascination with what exists beneath the surface extends into her design philosophy. ArdAzAei has become known for revealing what is often hidden, whether the internal structure of materials, the invisible forces of nature, or the emotional layers embedded within craftsmanship. “Making the invisible visible is not about revealing everything—it is about creating a dialogue,” she explains. Inspired by the geometry of a sea urchin, the rhythm of tides, and the poetry of Rumi and Hafez, each creation becomes what she describes as “a hidden language,” carrying memory, intention, and care through every unseen detail of its making.

Light, too, sits at the centre of her creative universe. In collections such as The Diffraction of Light, luminescence becomes not an effect, but a subject, translated through precision cuts, layered surfaces, pleats, textures, and the dialogue between opacity and transparency. “Light is never static—it moves, refracts, disappears, and returns,” she says. Whether through couture or fine jewellery, her role, as she describes it, is to orchestrate “the encounter between material and immaterial—between what is seen and what is felt.”
Her multicultural upbringing continues to shape that perspective. Born in Iran, raised in Gothenburg, and creatively rooted in Paris, Ardakani’s world is built on the intersection of cultural memory and discipline. Persian poetry and symbolism bring richness and emotion, Sweden introduced silence, restraint, and clarity, while Paris refined her understanding of craftsmanship. “My work exists at their intersection—where richness meets clarity, and intuition is supported by structure.”

That same balance defines how she approaches creation in the atelier. For Ardakani, technical precision and artistic expression are not opposites, but essential partners. “Precision is what allows emotion to exist with clarity,” she explains. Each piece is built with rigorous construction while allowing space for movement, transformation, and intuition. “A design must hold, but it must also breathe.” Being present in the atelier remains central to her process, allowing what she calls a constant dialogue between thinking and making.
In a world shaped by speed and excess, ArdAzAei stands for a slower, more intentional approach to luxury. Every couture and prêt-à-porter piece is created with longevity in mind, beyond seasons or trends. Achieving GOTS certification in 2022 marked another step in that commitment to transparency, traceability, and responsible craftsmanship. For Ardakani, the definition of luxury today is simple yet uncompromising: “Luxury, today, is not excess—it is intention.”

Looking ahead, she sees ArdAzAei as “a living structure—constantly evolving while remaining true to its essence.” Her vision is to deepen the dialogue between material, science, perception, light, movement, and the body—transforming design from objects into experiences. And when asked about legacy, her answer is equally thoughtful: if ArdAzAei can leave behind “a way of thinking… a sensitivity to detail, a respect for craft, and the belief that fashion can carry meaning beyond the visible,” then that, she says, would be a meaningful legacy.
