Louis Vuitton Celebrates Seven Years of Artycapucines at Art Basel Paris

Louis Vuitton, an associate partner of Art Basel Paris, is celebrating seven years of its Artycapucines project at this year’s fair. The retrospective, presented on the Grand Palais’ Balcon d’Honneur, brings together bags and artworks from 14 artists in a group-show format.

Launched in 2019, Artycapucines invites artists to reinterpret the House’s iconic Capucines bag through their own creative language. Working with Louis Vuitton’s artisans, they have transformed the bag with painting, sculpture, embroidery, portraiture, and assemblage.

The exhibition pairs each bag with a related artwork. Highlights include Alex Israel’s vibrant Cut-Out-Fin (Golden Hour), Urs Fischer’s playful Fruits, Sam Falls’s botanical Western Wind, and Tschabalala Self’s layered Kitten. Other featured artists include Josh Smith, Henry Taylor, Gregor Hildebrandt, Kennedy Yanko, Liza Lou, and Billie Zangewa. Their works show how ideas move between canvas, sculpture, textile, and leather.

The presentation also honours long-time collaborators Takashi Murakami, the late Yayoi Kusama, and the late Frank Gehry. Murakami’s camouflage-inspired Monogramouflage Skull (Black, 2008) design, Kusama’s Great Gigantic Pumpkin (2023), and Gehry’s fish-shaped lamps, Untitled (Paris II, 2012), add a sense of continuity to the project.

A new Artycapucines collection dedicated to Keith Haring is also on view. It is shown alongside a 1930s Louis Vuitton suitcase signed by Haring in the 1980s, connecting the new collection to the artist’s lasting relationship with the House.

The exhibition design draws on the visuals of archival storage and fine-art transport. Open crates, plinths, and trunk-like structures reference Louis Vuitton’s origins as a packer and trunk-maker. Louis Vuitton’s relationship with artists stretches back more than a century, beginning with Pierre Legrain in 1920. Artycapucines continues that tradition by placing artistic imagination alongside the House’s leather goods savoir-faire.

The retrospective is open to the public at the Grand Palais from October 23 to 25, 2026, as part of Art Basel Paris. For the first time, a selection of books from Louis Vuitton Editions will also be available at the Art Basel Store.
