Louis Vuitton Pays Tribute to Frank Gehry at Art Basel Hong Kong
At the 2026 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, Louis Vuitton honors its long-standing collaboration with visionary architect Frank Gehry through a retrospective booth celebrating over two decades of creative exchange. Spanning architecture, fashion, fragrance, and horology, the exhibition highlights a partnership defined by innovation, craftsmanship, and a shared commitment to pushing artistic boundaries.

Internationally renowned for his sculptural approach to form, Frank Gehry has left an indelible mark on contemporary design. As a Show Partner of the fair, Louis Vuitton presents a chronological journey through eight thematic chapters, tracing Gehry’s contributions to the House. Through models, sketches, and artworks, visitors are offered a rare insight into his creative process and enduring legacy. As Gehry himself reflects, curiosity remains central to his work: a continuous pursuit of questions that lead to new forms and ideas.

The collaboration between LVMH and Gehry began in 2001 with the conception of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, inaugurated in 2014. This architectural landmark, composed of sweeping glass sails and luminous volumes, embodies transparency, movement, and light. The same year marked Gehry’s entry into fashion design with the “Twisted Box” bag, created for Louis Vuitton’s 160th anniversary.

In 2019, Gehry expanded his architectural footprint with the Louis Vuitton Maison Seoul, his first building in South Korea, featuring a fluid glass façade inspired by both the Fondation and traditional Korean design. Subsequent collaborations continued to blur the boundaries between art and object, including his imaginative reinterpretation of the iconic Louis Vuitton trunk for the House’s 200th anniversary in 2022, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and the sculptural Murano glass Blossom stoppers for the Les Extraits fragrance collection.

A central highlight of the exhibition is the Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry handbag collection, first unveiled at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2023. Comprising ten limited-edition pieces, the collection translates Gehry’s signature themes architecture, material experimentation, and animal forms, into wearable art. Designs such as the Capucines MM Concrete Pockets echo the raw textures of his buildings, while the Capucines BB Croc features a handle inspired by his crocodile sculptures. Other pieces, including the Capucines MM Floating Fish and Capucines Mini Drawn Fish, revisit his fascination with aquatic motifs, while the Capucines BB Analog Bag pays homage to the angular façade of New York’s IAC Building. Each piece demonstrates the House’s exceptional craftsmanship pushed to new creative limits.

Gehry’s engagement with the Louis Vuitton Monogram has also led to a series of “Monogram Studies,” reinterpreting the House’s iconic symbols into new visual codes. One such motif became emblematic of the collaborative collection. The exhibition further showcases the Tambour watch, released in 2024, which merges the precision of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton with Gehry’s sculptural sensibility. Crafted in sapphire and hand-finished with fluid contours, the timepiece reflects his architectural language while symbolizing the passage of time.

Through this retrospective, Louis Vuitton not only celebrates the creative genius of Frank Gehry but also underscores a partnership that continues to redefine the dialogue between art, design, and luxury.
Art Basel Hong Kong runs from March 27 to 29, 2026, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, offering visitors an immersive exploration of one of the most influential collaborations in contemporary design.
