    Suzanne Kalan on creating pieces that speak to ‘women who want more than sparkles’

    We spoke to the designer about her decade-spanning passion for jewellery

    Suzanne Kalan is known for her modern take on fine jewellery and instantly recognisable Fireworks design. And the Los Angeles-based designer's pieces are available at Harvey Nichols, Mall of the Emirates.

    Known for her timeless pieces and signature asymmetry, Kalan has built a name for herself over the past 37 years by staying true to her design voice. Now, with over 11 years in the region, she understands the local clientele better than most: “They’ve always loved my jewellery and that's why we ended up opening here. Everybody thinks the Middle Eastern moment has passed, but no, they’re very fashion savvy. They know exactly what they want.” 

    Her pieces resonate with women who want more than just sparkles - they want substance, story and individuality. They want meaning. “They’ve been all over and they want the best,” she says, adding that “People want to be different. People want to have their own”. Every curve, texture and contrast is deliberate. “I want things moving constantly… that creates interest”, she explains. “Tomorrow, you’ll find something else. That's what I like. I like the interest - it’s not boring, it's interesting”. Her pieces are designed to draw the eye in, revealing new details with each wear. It’s this quiet complexity that gives her jewellery a lasting charm. 

    The Suzanne Kalan brand has always been a family story. Her daughter began helping as a child, threading crystals on pins. “She would come after school, packing and writing labels, everything was handwritten back then,” Kalan remembers. Today, her daughter still designs her line. Her husband handles production. Her son runs marketing and photography. “We’ve been working together for 37 years. Every morning, we get up, have coffee together, and discuss the day and what’s happening.” It’s a business built not only on creativity and craftsmanship, but on trust, rhythm and the quiet rituals of daily life. 

    As she prepares to launch a sleek new line of tech rings, designed to replace clunky, forgettable wearables, her motivation remains unchanged. “People don’t wear it… because it’s so hideous,” she says. “So I made like ten or 12 styles, thinner, wider, less expensive, more expensive.” 

    From a single cotton necklace to a globally recognised fine jewellery brand, Suzanne Kalan’s journey is a testament to intuition, intention, and enduring passion. Her pieces may sparkle, but it’s the story behind each one, the craftsmanship, the family ties, the thoughtful design, that gives them their true brilliance.
