Inside Vacheron Constantin’s Manufacture in the heart of Geneva
Jessica Michault
Beauty in all things is the order of the day
Anyone who has a love of the artistry that is at the heart of watchmaking knows the name Vacheron Constantin. Its creations – from its always impressive Métiers D’Art timepieces and its High Jewellery Traditionnelle tourbillon to its Overseas and Égérie collections – are always a celebration of tradition and innovation in equal measure.
But in order to truly understand the luxury watchmaking company’s dedication to the art of keeping time, a visit to its Manufacture in Geneva is a must. Touring the facility isn’t just a journey into the world of watchmaking – it’s an immersion into history, craftsmanship, and invention.
As the oldest continuously operating watch manufacture since 1755, the maison has perfected the delicate balance of preserving tradition while embracing modernity. Its headquarters, completed in 2015, is an architectural beauty in its own right, inspired by the brand’s iconic Maltese cross logo. The sleek, hyper-modern design, with expansive glass walls and open spaces, offers a haven of natural light and tranquillity, ideal for the meticulous craft unfolding within.
Cross the threshold and immediately there is an understanding that this is a place dedicated to finding beauty through precision while still ensuring to find inspiration from the natural world. This feat is realised thanks to the abundance of floor-to-ceiling glass walls flooding the buildings with both natural light and views of the surroundings.
The zen-like environment feels like a sanctuary, fostering the focus and exactitude essential for crafting the timepieces the company is famous for. Within its walls, centuries of expertise converge with cutting-edge techniques to create some of the world’s most extraordinary watches.
The tour begins in the machine room, where the hum of large-scale production belies the artistry it supports. Here, metal rods are transformed into the intricate components of a watch, from wheels and barrels to movement plates. Then comes an impressive walk through departments dedicated to the often-unsung aspects of watchmaking, like servicing, restoration, assembly, and complications – each a critical component to the centuries-long success of Vacheron Constantin.
Also critical to the company’s standing at the pinnacle of the watchmaking world is its Métiers d’Art department. This is where the boundaries of horological artistry are continually pushed in the pursuit of excellence. Considering this fact, it was almost endearing to see how understated and petite the space was that is dedicated to the work of guilloché, engraving, gem-setting, and enamelling.
It also telegraphed the message that Vacheron Constantin has every intention of taking all the time it needs to craft to perfection a dial festooned with diamonds or layered in enamel to bring to life miniature versions of iconic artwork. Machines that look centuries old are used to craft hypnotic swirls of guilloché patterns, and within this modest space, watch cases come to life with engravings that carve into an infinite array of motifs.
But perhaps the part of the Manufacture that best personified the maison’s endless pursuit of existence was found in the one part of the building not bathed in the light streaming through its walls of windows – the archives. Safe and sound in the bowls of the headquarters, the archives are a true treasure trove.
It’s as if Vacheron Constantin never threw out a single piece of paper in almost 270 years. Purchase orders can be traced back generations, movements being used in current timepieces can find their origin stories within the tomes that stack the archive corridors, and any watchmaker on the hunt for inspiration for a new case shape, or an inventive idea for a watch strap, need look no further than the rich and meticulously cross-referenced archives.
By the end of the day, after touring the facilities, one thing becomes crystal clear to any visitor of Vacheron Constantin’s Manufacture – this is not merely a place of production.
Instead, it is a temple to the enduring human drive to create, to strive for perfection and – when it comes to the watchmaking this company pursues – finding perfection within its grasp.
